More reason...

Today is a day when I look out
over my life & I see you there & I know
there is more reason to this world
than we will ever understand.

Dark way

I'm not sure if the world's all that serious, she said,
or if it just has a really dark way of having a good time.

Cemetery Sunday

Filled to the brim with dangerous thoughts & no where to put them since she lives in a small town & everybody's always watching.

Joy of spring

The birds brought seed & flowers & bits of brightly colored string & placed them in her hair while she slept so that she would remember the wild joy of spring when she finally awoke.

What Inn is this...

What Inn is this
Where for the night
Peculiar traveller comes?
Who is the landlord?
Where the maids?
Behold, what curious rooms!
No ruddy fires on the hearth,
No brimming tankards flow.
Necromancer, landlord,
Who are these below?

Inspiration

I'm ready to be inspired, she said & I said that's not quite how it works, so instead we sat in the garden, breathing & watching the bees until she smiled quietly & said, I forget it's that simple.

Inventing Evil

He said who invented evil? & I said I wasn't sure anybody invented it, it just happened when somebody got tired of all the effort it took to live right. They probably didn't have anyone to teach them, he said & I thought to myself, we might be doing this right after all.

My way home

My favorite way home is past the cemetery
since it's about the only place in the whole town
where people keep their opinions to themselves.

Alice

I'm old enough to wear red boots any time I want, she said.
She wanted to be buried in them, but her son had them put her in taupe pumps instead.
She wore red all winter long so the ambulance could find her quicker if she fell in a snow bank & also it hides dirt.
She had married early & had always been a pragmatist.

Love poems...

Not very good with love poems to the world,
so they usually just end up saying,
How's it going? to everyone they meet

More fair...

They left me with your shadow, saying things like Life is not fair & I believed them for a long time. But today, I remembered the way you laughed & the heat of your hand in mine & I knew that life is more fair than we can ever imagine if we are there to live it
